In recent years, the development momentum of PoE power supply technology has become stronger and stronger. With a series of advantages such as simplifying the installation and deployment of electrical equipment, energy saving, and safety, PoE power has become the new darling of scenarios such as wireless coverage, security monitoring, and smart grids. The solution described in this article is a PoE power solution for industrial gateways. Integrating TI's Power over Ethernet (PoE) with a high-performance SimpleLink ™ MSP432E4 Ethernet microcontroller (MCU) with Ethernet capabilities enables customers to develop Internet of Things (IoT) applications on small circuit boards. The MSP432 ™ SimpleLink MCU used in the solution is an Ethernetare high-performance Arm® Cortex®-M MCU, integrating Ethernet MAC and PHY, and various wired communication interfaces, including universal line (USB), control network (CAN), and Quad-SPI (QSSI), I²C, SPI, UART and other industry protocols. MSP432E4 allows customers to utilize their existing network, not only to communicate and control with equipment through PoE solutions, but also to provide power, reduce system costs in the field of IoT, and add value to their industrial gateway products.

The TPS23753A used in the solution is a combined PoE power supply device (PD) interface and current mode DC-DC controller, which is optimized for the design of isolated converters. As a 13 W, Type 1 PD, PoE implementation supports the standard IEEE802.3 protocol. The TPS23753A supports multiple input voltage ORing options, including maximum voltage, external adapter preferences, and PoE preferences. The PoE interface has external detection feature pins and can also be used to disable the internal hot-swap MOSFET, which can turn off the PoE function. The classification can be programmed to any defined type using a single resistor. The DC-DC controller has a startup trap startup mechanism with an internal switching current source, which provides the advantage of cyclic overload fault protection without the constant power loss of a pull-up resistor.
